Chickens or Eggs, That Is The Question

What came first, the chickens or the eggs? We love chickens at Under the Sun Farm. We’ve owned our feathered friends most of our lives. In fact, keeping them as long as we have, we’ve learned a lot about these little weed-eating, bug picking, egg makers. We’ve had all kinds, from tufted wild looking things, to furry legged giants, to polka dotted minis and silky haired cuties. Of course, don’t forget a whole bunch of plain Janes. Over the years, we’ve shown our chickens at fairs – ahem, winning a few best in show prizes! We’ve bought chickens from all over the continent, hatched them in homemade incubators, and watched them reproduce without any human help. It’s a tossup who finds the hatching more fascinating, us or the kids. Of course, they just want to pick up the wet squirming chicks without a care in the world. Why not? Wouldn’t you? It’s really interesting to note that a mother hen is a doting intelligent creature. With a complicated language, she teaches her babies. Number one lesson of the day. “Stay away from Ruby.” Some roosters make great dads too, bringing delicious squirming tidbits to his “wife” and kids. The involved social life of the flock is fascinating and anyone who thinks these little characters are boring should spend some time with one! Sadly, due to our busy lives these days, our current flock doesn’t have names (previous monikers include Daisy, Rose, Marigold, and Henrietta), and most of them are garden variety brown or white layers.
